(d) More Reading Suggestions

(a) RESEARCH GUIDES AND OTHER BIBLIOGRAPHIES:

Birch, Alan, Y.C. Yao, and Elizabeth Sinn. Research materials for Hong Kong Studies. Hong Kong: Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong, 1984. This dated but useful volume takes the student through all the possibilities for further study in Hong Kong archeology, cartography, village studies, Chinese enterprises, economic and social statistics. It has dedicated chapters on the resources (then) available from the government, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank, HKU’s Hung On-to Memorial Library (Special Collections) and the Public Records Office.

Going back in time, early Guides show the pattern of preoccupation among historians of Hong Kong, and can help a new student discover what might interest them most. For example:

1969: Hongkong Studies: A Bibliography. Compiled by M.I. Berkowitz and Eddie K.K. Poon. Department of Extra-Mural Studies, Chinese University of Hong Kong. This has a stated bias towards matters of social science and history and classifies work under the following headings: History and PreHistory, Geography and geology, Culture (Chinese and British), Social Organization (coveting Economic, Education, Politics, Housing, Voluntary and Welfare Organizations, Community Studies, Recreation and Libraries, Government, Medical and Social Welfare), Social Deviance, Social Change.

It also lists previous bibliographies on Hong Kong:
– The 1873 Catalogue of Works in the Morrison Library, City Hall
– The 1962 Bibliography of Social Science Periodicals and Monograph Series
– The 1965 Hong Kong Bibliography by J.M. Braga

1974: Hong Kong, A Social Sciences Bibliography. By David Fu-keung Ip, Chi-keung Leung, Chung-Tong Wu, with assistance of Tse-Fun Chan. Centre of Asian Studies, University of Hong Kong. Though dated, this is most useful for its combination of books and separately listed articles (for example, from the Far Eastern Economic Review), and its inclusion of materials in Chinese, Japanese and even German. Under the ‘General’ heading, many publications are listed which debate Hong Kong’s place in the world in the decades immediately after World War Two, and its future prospects as a colony, as an independent city-state or as a part of China. It has sections on History, Population, Social Stratification and much more. The Family an Marriage section lists the various White Papers and other discussions of marriage laws and customs in Hong Kong. Under Race Relations it mentions just two articles on the Portuguese, two on Indians, and two by Lethbridge, see below.

1975: Hong Kong Bibliography. By the Urban Council Librarian.

This is arranged as if by government department: Accidents and Disasters; Agriculture Fisheries Forestry; Archaeology; Architecture Town Planning; Art Handicraft, etc. …through History; Immigration; Military; Riots and Disturbances; Social Welfare; and more. It takes note of a 1958 Who’s Who by Rola Luzzatto, updated in 1970, and the 1957 Asia Who’s Who by Felix Wu and his 1937 Prominent Chinese in Hong Kong. Under ‘History’, it lists authors from Braga to Tarrant, a large selection of World War Two memoirs of detention and escape, and some now long-forgotten gems such as the 1867 Nicholas Dennys Guide to the Treaty Ports of China and Japan, Thomas Ryan’s Jesuits Under Fire in the Siege of Hong Kong, Skvorzov’s Chinese Ink and Brush Sketches of Prisoner of War Camp Life in Hong Kong, and Robert Ward’s Asia for the Asiatics.

Ting, Joseph S.P. and Susanna L.K. Siu, for the Hong Kong Museum of History. Collected Essays on Various Historical Materials for Hong Kong Studies. Hong Kong: Hong Kong Museum of History/Urban Council 1990. This includes discussion of the usefulness of Grave Memorials as historical documents (by Dr Solomon Bard), of Private Business Letters (by Dr Fok Kai-cheong), poetry and song from the New Territories (Dr Patrick Hase), documents for the sale and transfer of women and children up to 1949 (Dr James Hayes), the war-time records of the Public Records Office (Dr Lau Yun-woo), the war-time postal items and records of Hong Kong (Susanna Lai-kuen Siu), and, the Tung Wah Archives (Dr Elizabeth Sinn). The Journal of the Hong Kong Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society is a treasure trove of learned articles on every aspect of Hong Kong. As a largely voluntary operation its contents vary over time, but many of the most important pieces of work by Carl Smith and others first came to light through these pages. It began its annual publication in the 1960s and continues to this day. An Index exists to the first two decades.

A vital part of Hong Kong’s historical record.
