From the late 1950s through the early 2000s, the United States surpassed Britain, Japan, and mainland China as Hong Kong’s principal export market and outside investor. Rather than a product of U.S. government or corporate decisions, Dr. Peter Hamilton will argue that this shift stemmed from Hong Kong business elites’ own evolving U.S.-centered strategies. We will look at the examples of the Tang textile family, the Fung family of Li & Fung, and Sir Gordon Wu.
