We rarely associate piracy with Hong Kong, except when we visit the Cheung Po Tsai Cave in Cheung Chau, or when we are reminded of the Jetfoil Guia case in 1995. Given its geographical location, however, Hong Kong had always had pirates around in the past five hundred years or so, if not longer. Only in the post-war years do we see the (almost) complete demise of maritime piracy around Hong Kong.  The last wave of piracy in Hong Kong began with the popularisation of steam navigation in the late 19th century, and ended with the restoration of maritime order in the 1940s and 50s. As we explore this final chapter of Hong Kong’s piracy, we will see how piracy’s nature and tactics evolved, how Hong Kong responded to it, and how it eventually came to an end — or did it?
